James Moore

James Moore’s work has evolved from a photo-realist style into a painting technique that plays with mimicry. Painting, he believes, has always been about fakery – about synthesising the world into a plastic space. It has little to do with transcribing direct observations onto canvas, instead it is a process of mimicking media, cutting and sampling. He is interested in a subversion of the role of a painter of realistic imagery. The only truth to be found in his work is subjective - the paintings are of subjects that are usually either fake, don't really exist, or are impossible to see in the flesh, but that still have a collective reality amongst groups of people. They act as a pointer to the plastic, simulated space that we increasingly inhabit. He often uses source material that is a bad copy of the ‘real’, such as a museum diorama or computer game. He is interested in exploiting the falseness of painting and mediated representations, and investigating a kind of melancholy that he feels when confronted with the apparently total embracement our culture has for the virtual, the simulation, the construct. Biography Born in Cardiff in 1979, James Moore studied BA(Hons) Fine Art at Manchester School of Art and MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art. His most recent solo exhibition was 'Strange Eden' at Oriel Mwldan in 2018. Group exhibitions have included 'Abstract : Reality' and 'Into a Light' at The Saatchi Gallery, RUG in Cardiff, BEEP 2018 in Swansea, 'Twice as Nice' at PS Mirabel in Manchester and 'Like the Lines of a Hand' at Paper Gallery in Manchester. James has exhibited in Y Lle Celf at the National Eisteddfod of Wales on three occasions.
