Description

Richard Shields’ practice investigates varied contemporary issues through the use of the site specific, found objects and traditional skills. His pieces contain a duality between what is often seen as valuable permanence found in the process of drawing and mark making and the disposability of everyday encounters. Whilst producing contemporary works Shields looks to history both as an indicator and to contextualize events that occur in his own life and to the wider public. His past curatorial explorations in the site specific have seen him apply a range of media from oil paint to swimming pools, projectors and paper coffee cups. His topics of interest lie in financial posturing, religion and the autopsy of artistic process through an allegory with a sense of humour.

Biography

Richard Shields graduated from Manchester Metropolitan university in 2006 with a BA Hons in Sculpture. Shields is currently based in Manchester where he runs a small studio called ‘The Other Side of The Door Is Red’ in the Hotspur Press. He is co-founder and Director of 'Contents May Vary', formed in 2004, and has exhibited nationally and internationally both as part of the collective and on solo projects.

Hermione Allsopp

Hermione Allsopp creates photographic collage using objects from domestic interiors found in charity shops. These objects carry collective attachments, memories and meanings as part of our material culture and its history. Allsopp creates a shift in perception: partial, recognizable objects are altered to reflect the way memory and meaning are fractured, reshaped or reformed in a visual exploration of the duality of body and mind; of interior and exterior and of object and space.

Hermione Allsopp studied MA Fine Art at The University of Creative Arts. Since graduating in 2012 she has exhibited work across the UK and was shortlisted for the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award 2013, and had her first solo exhibition Accumulated Comforts in 2014.

Adam Batchelor

Over 50% of the world’s populations now live in urban areas, in mass, we have moved away from the countryside, and away from nature. Adam Batchelor's work is a modern interpretation of naturalist painting and looks at the relationship we now have with nature and the imbalance that we have incurred between the natural world and ourselves. Through drawing, Batchelor wishes to look at how we portray and understand ecology and the animal kingdom.

Adam Batchelor graduated with a BA Hons in Illustration from Norwich University of the Arts in 2009, where he developed a bold graphic self initiated approach involving sculpture and model making. Allan Bech

Allan Bech’s works are often described as surreal and metaphoric. He works within the fields of the irrational and subconscious which is most apparent when pencil is applied to paper, drawing what comes to my mind. Finding inspiration in everyday life, Bech meanders his environment collecting thoughts on scraps of paper. His beautifully detailed works are a catalogue of the mundane events of the everyday. Bech creates his own perception in life, a unique vision of the world.

Biography

Allan Bech (born 1983) had his first exhibition at Gallery V58, back in 2010. The architect, C.F. Møller offered him a solo-exhibition at their headquarters. He studied at Aarhus School of Architecture, Jutland Art Academy before returning to Aarhus School of Architecture. Allan Bech was associated to V58 from November 2010 to October 2013, before moving to Copenhagen, where he now resides and works. He recently returned to Aarhus as he was invited to do a wall piece near the city’s cultural centre, Godsbanen. In 2014 he will exhibit in Denmark, Norway and at PAPER in the UK.

Alice Bradshaw

Alice Bradshaw works with a wide range of media and processes involving the manipulation of everyday objects and materials. Mass-produced, anonymous objects are often rendered dysfunctional caricatures of themselves, addressing concepts of purpose and futility. Bradshaw creates or accentuates subtleties, blurring distinctions between the absurd and the mundane.

Alice Bradshaw curates collaboratively and is founding director of the Museum of Contemporary Rubbish and University of Incidental Knowledge, co-founding director of Fundada Artists' Film Festival and Contents May Vary and co-curator for Westgate Studios and Holmfirth Arts Festival.

Jemima Brown

Untitled Profile Pictures is an ongoing drawing project in which Jemima has experimented with the visual translation of a virtual social structure in a series of drawings of Facebook profile pictures. From the lo-res pixilated images of ‘profile pictures’ she has made to date nearly 200 drawings of her own Facebook friends (always choosing an image from their profile pictures in order that the choice of image is their choice for a public image). For her presentation at PAPER, Jemima will show a selection of these drawings selected from PAPER’s and Jemima’s mutual Facebook friends.

Biography

Jemima Brown is based in London and has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally since graduating from an MA at Chelsea School of Art in 1995. She was selected for New Contemporaries 1997, and her work has been included in exhibitions at the Royal Academy and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. She has also had solo exhibitions with Vilma Gold, Rosie Wilde, and the Agency in London. Past awards have included a Fulbright Scholarship at UCLA, Los Angeles, and the Cocheme Fellowship at Byam Shaw, University of the Arts. In 2011 she received the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award, at Standpoint in London.

Gareth Bunting

Gareth Bunting is an artist and keen traveller. His work is a kind of visual diary which documents his travels in the form of ink drawings. His drawings are often large scale, vast and surreal landscapes which map out places and experiences. He plays with scale and the perspective of the viewer, by leading the eye along lines, through impossible landscapes which contain repeating and evolving imagery, thus forming a narrative in one static image. He is fascinated in drawing from memory and mixing together the real and the unreal, using drawing as a tool to look back, study and understand things more fluently. He draws from his imagination and uses it to fill in the gaps where memory fails.

Gareth Bunting Graduated with an MA in Fine art from Sheffield Hallam in 2014. Since then he has been selected to be artist in residence at the Saqacha Centro Del arte Peru, and the Xochi Quetzal residency in Mexico. He often makes work while travelling, interacting with places and documenting his experiences in the form of drawing. He has exhibited at the Castillo del lamas in Peru, the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield, the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, and the Manchester Contemporary art fair.

Fulya Çetin

Fulya Çetin’s art consists of a body of portraits where she freezes, questions and consolidates the concepts of identity, existence, nature and life between her own image and that of the paper. The objects and subjects within Çetin’s works reflect the facets and surfaces in which she searches for their true essence as she opens them up to integrate with the viewer. These paintings have a look. A look with which the viewer is faced... They are stripped of space and time; between a state of existence and disintegration, near a neutral state, focused on the neutral, they are within a space where they search for pure consciousness.

Biography

Fulya Çetin was born in Istanbul in 1970. After graduating from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting in 1995, she participated in various group exhibitions and created projects with the “Hafriyat Artist’s Group”. Çetin lives and works in Istanbul. Paper will provide the first opportunity to view Çetin's work in the UK.

Carole Cluer

Carole Cluer’s work explores whether it is possible to create memories through the act of drawing. Carefully drawn from her imagination, various ephemera give weight to the unreal through trompe l’oeil style effects. Carole constructs an alternative future or past within various objects such as a hat, a coat or a wallet, each meticulously recreated by hand in pencil.

Carole Cluer completed her Masters at Sheffield Hallam University in 2014. She was included in Everyday Illusions at PAPER.

Jenny Core

Jenny Core’s work is an investigation into the potential and diversity of drawing as a medium and not ‘just a process’. Her works are time led and explore performative processes. The object is captured on paper. It dissolves, explodes and ceases to exist in its current form. What remains is a mark of an object that once existed, a moment captured in time. These created forms have then been manipulated and appropriated to create playful narratives.

Lives and works in Berlin. Core studied Fine Art at The University of Huddersfield (2009). Core curated The Drawing Project at Castlefield Gallery in 2014. Lisa Denyer

Lisa Denyer's process derives from every day observations, and the subsequent abstraction of certain imagery through painting. Each piece begins with careful considerations around colour, which often evolve into prolonged investigations over a series. Lisa is interested in the idea of interventions, whether accidental, intentional, natural or human. Her work explores matter, materiality and changing states.

Biography

Lisa Denyer graduated from Coventry University in 2009 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. In 2010 she received second prize in the Gilchrist Fisher Award, held at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery, London. Other awards include being short listed for Salon Art Prize 2010, The Title Art Prize 2011 and Bankley Open 2013 and 2014. Recent exhibitions and curatorial projects include Geode (2014); a solo show at South Square Gallery, Thornton, Society of Island Universes (2014) at Piccadilly Place, Manchester, About Painting (2014) at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester, and @PaintBritain (2014/15) at Ipswich Art School Gallery. Forthcoming exhibitions include Contemporary British Abstraction at SE9 Container Gallery, London (February 2015), and INBOX at Art-Athina, Athens (June 2015). Lisa won the PS Mirabel Open Exhibition in 2015.

Annabel Dover

David Hancock

David Hancock’s work attempts to make palpable the psychological gap between the world that we physically experience and the psychological states through which it is apprehended. Though his use of watercolour on paper, he presents escapist fantasies, whether through youth subcultures, the fantasy worlds of computer games or by directly referencing historical utopian visions. Hancock’s new series depict the phenomenon of Ball Jointed Dolls (BJDs) and the subculture that has sprung up around these elaborate dolls produced in East Asia. Hancock creates a series of characters representing facets of youth culture. After an extensive study in Cosplay, Hancock chose a framework similar to those employed by popular Manga franchises (multiple characters with a recognisable connection) Hancock's characters embody elements from the periodic table. Painting from life, he brings these dolls to life in a contemporary re-staging of the Pygmalion myth.

Biography

David Hancock graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1996 and has been exhibiting widely since. He has appeared in a number of prominent exhibitions such as the John Moores 21, Young Masters and the BP Portrait Prize. He has had solo and group shows across the UK and Europe as well as New York, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Hong Kong. He recently completed a PhD at University of Salford. David's recent solo exhibitions include Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Touchstones, Rochdale, and 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe. In 2015 he will have solo exhibitions at Ruskin Gallery, Cambridge and Howden Park, Livingston.

Paraic Leahy

There is an absurd logic to the paintings of Paraic Leahy, a sort of magic realism that deviates from the familiar. The mutations present in these portraits are implausible and outlandish yet obedient to certain mathematical principles we might call unifying laws.

Biography

Paraic Leahy (Born 1985) Lives and works in Limerick City, Ireland. Graduating from Limerick School of Art and Design in 2008. He had solo exhibitions at Nag Gallery, Dublin (2014) and Ormston House Gallery, Limerick, Ireland, (2013). He is also the recipient of a number of awards including the Ucross Foundation Fellowship Award, Wyoming, U.S.A (2011); North Tipperary Artist Support Scheme (2011,2012,2013 & 2014); Shortlisted for Modessqe 1st International Painting Award (2013); Claremorris Open Exhibition award, selected by Lisa Le Feuvre (2010); Tyrone Gutherie Centre Bursary Award (2010).

Simon Leahy-Clark

Simon Leahy-Clark's practice stems from an investigation into the potential of everyday ephemeral materials and possibilities within drawing, painting and image making. His current work is focused on newspapers, exploring the inherent qualities of this everyday material/object and exploiting the form and information within, while also bringing to the fore the tactile nature of the paper itself. The collage works use remnants from previous work – cut out pictures are re-assembled anew, becoming a collection of imagery as well as a single image. The ‘master’ images depict abandoned spaces or objects, or are otherwise inbetween or transitory areas. The work fluctuates between its constituent parts and the overall picture. The experience of looking remains in constant flux.

Naomi Lethbridge

The forms that Naomi Lethbridge creates serve as a record of her labour. In the drawings, lines are accumulated in a systematic technique, reducing any subject to a democratic language. By using a purposefully limited means of creating an image or form, a new entity can be created from its most basic beginnings, with each element under her control, regardless of the nature of the work.

Collection – of ideas, information, experiences – greatly influences the work, and the practice of classification, as a method of interpreting the surroundings, informs the aesthetic and concept. The style and its often eclectic and quirky nature is reminiscent of an historical approach towards acquiring knowledge, expressing the desire to know, understand and organise all that surrounds, and to commemorate it in physical form.

Naomi Lethbridge graduated in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2004 and Manchester Metropolitan University in 2009. Her work has been shown widely throughout Britain and Europe.

Hayley Lock

Incorporating drawing, collage, sculpture, sound and film, Hayley Lock’s practice attempts to capture conversational dialogues across parallel time frames, identities and locations. Often restaging found and imagined conversations and constructed histories Lock appropriates, reimagines and mirrors back a pseudo fantastical world where visions are commonplace and imagination is rife, revealing a dark world in perpetual crisis. Lock is currently working with and under hypnosis in an attempt to re-engage with her practice as an altered self, looking at where the unconscious meets the conscious creating new systemic structures of belief.

Hayley Lock is an artist and lecturer graduating from Goldsmiths College in 1989 and from The University of Essex in 2012. She had five solo shows spread across the UK in 2011/12 as part of her project (Now that would be) Telling and has exhibited both nationally and internationally in selected group shows and collaborations. Lock’s practice attempts to capture conversational dialogues across parallel time frames, identities and locations. Often restaging found and imagined conversations through constructed histories Lock is currently working with and under hypnosis to re-engage as an altered self, chasing male visionaries across history. Recently Lock has collaborated with DJ and record producer Jamie Jones producing imagery and film for his upcoming world tour and has been working on a solo titled Lone Pine Club on show at The Minories Gallery in Colchester. Lock currently looking at the Occult.

David Miles

David Miles’ work highlights the more sinister aspects of urban life and human psychology. His practice includes cut-card, mobiles, model making, painting, printmaking and artists books – all of which have a strong narrative element. Some works stem from personal stories, some are inspired by local history or news items, and others reveal more generic observations.

Biography

David lives and works in Brighton. He attended Falmouth School of Art and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions in Argentina, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada, USA and the UK (including The Lowry in Salford, Gimpel Fils in London and Brighton Museum).

Narbi Price

Narbi Price's new series of paintings are based on the locations of the IRA Bombings in Manchester on 15th June 1996. These locations are depicted as they are today. There is no immediate indication to the viewer of the depicted site’s histories. The only acknowledgement is that the work’s titles are suffixed with the date of the bombing in brackets - it is therefore possible to decode the provenance of the site. The viewer’s experience and reading of the work changes irrevocably with knowledge of the history of the depicted site. By withholding or encoding the historical significances of the depicted sites, Price wishes to question how the formal selection of the imagery and the painting process itself can evoke a mood and suggest an autonomous authority and to explore the relationship between a site and its representation.

Narbi Price was born in Hartlepool. He currently lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He completed his Fine Art Masters at Newcastle University in 2010. He has been selected for the John Moores Painting Prize on two occasions. In 2012, he was a prizewinner for the work Untitled (MJK). He is currently undertaking a PhD at Newcastle University. Narbi also shows with Vane in Newcastle.

Leanne Richardson

Leanne Richardson's work focuses on appropriation and reproduction to create an illusion of questioning the use of materials, to show how advertising plays with senses in seducing the viewer. By creating one off reproductions to include animals, creates absurdity and uses their vulnerability to entice the viewer. Collage shows this use of reprodcution in magazines and the animalistic society we live in of discarding everything we no longer desire. By using paper in the same way as paint, Richardson creates an illusion of what materials are being used, manipulating judgements like advertising has the ability to do.

Leanne Richardson graduated in 2012 from Manchester Metropolitan University with a BA Hons in Fine Art. Leanne has been included in Making Faces, The Chapel Gallery, Ormskirk (2014); Silent Auction, Holden Gallery, Manchester (2012); Nine, Kraak Gallery, Manchester (2011). In 2013 she had a two-person exhibition with Lucy May Schofield at PAPER.

Conor Rogers

Lucy May Schofield

Lucy May Schofield’s practice attempts to capture moments. Focussing on the overlooked, she consistently documents vulnerability. Her desire to memorialise the unspoken and make a record of mortality or place are often manifest in the paintings, prints, books and installations she creates.

Biography

Since graduating from London College of Printing in 2002, Lucy May Schofield has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work is held in public and private collections in the UK and abroad including Tate Britain, Yale Center for British Art, Chelsea College of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University and the State Library of Queensland. Her artist multiples are stocked in London, Paris, San Francisco and L.A. She is the curator of ‘The Bibliotherapy Artist’s Book Library’ (BABL), a touring mobile library home to over 150 artists’ books.

George Shaw

I started to make these paintings out of a kind of mourning for the person I used to be: an enthusiastic, passionate teenager who read art books and novels and poems and biographies and watched films and TV and listened to music and dreamed. They are paintings of places that were familiar to me in my childhood and adolescence, places in which I found myself alone and thoughtful. They are places in which I forgot things. ... I paint the paintings of all the times and all the thoughts I lack the language to describe. For the one single moment that I can recall, I feel a dull sadness for the thousands I have forgotten.

George Shaw was born in Coventry in 1966. He studied at Sheffield before later doing an MA at the Royal College of Art in London. He now lives and works in Devon. He has been nominated for the Turner Prize 2011 for his retrospective The Sly and Unseen Day.

Stephanie Shaw

Stephanie Shaw's work has been an ongoing enquiry into building relationships between pre-existing imagery, found materials, and her own mark making, by playing with form, colour, texture, and scale. The juxtapositions and interactions in these relationships create tension, opening up dialogue between forms. She is interested in how the artist can influence viewers' perception and interpretation. Through the destabilising effect of collage on visual and contextual knowledge, the viewer's control is disturbed and questioned. Using mixed media, painting and drawing, she is; therefore, trying to create a space whereby the process is apparent and the artist is present.

Stephanie is from York, and has recently completed a degree in Illustration at Manchester School of Art. She lives and works in Manchester.

Ruby Tingle

Ruby Tingle graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2011. Specializing in collage, performance and music inspired by myth and folklore, her work deals primarily with the idea of personal psychology and private symbolism, and how this can be translated via the re telling of stories, normalisation of the fantastical and exploring the notion of in-between places. Self portraiture is employed to allow for the artists, a vicarious existence- a dreamt form of landscape, animal, and transformation become possible and documented. Performance and installation are used as a platform for the three dimensional translation of these ideas, often incorporating the theme of life drawing, looking at the static or moving body as it is forced into a living portrait. Music operates in a cyclic pattern alongside these visual artworks, lyrics often referring to or influenced by occurrences from within the collage and vice versa. The musical arrangements and physical aesthetics of these works function harmoniously, both questioning and engaging with the ambiguous and extraordinary.

Barbara Walker

‘Show and Tell’ is a series of ongoing works which explore how clothing is used by specific groups of men as a status symbol within their communities. The portraits, created on paper and onto walls, depict faceless young men often turned with their backs to the viewer. By obscuring the identity of her subjects, invites an audience to scrutinise the 'information' available - clothing, hair and jewellery - in order to complete the portrait. The works investigate expressions of individuality, conformity and stereotyping.

Biography

Barbara Walker is an artist based in Birmingham, England. Her practice is inspired by the social, polical and cultural realities that inform her life and lives of those around her. Working primarily in drawing and painting, her work adressess issues such as class, represantation, power, and belonging. Ally Wallace

Ally Wallace works across a range of disciplines including installation, drawing, painting, sculpture, video and animation, to create artworks in response to chosen locations. His works are mainly exhibited in the spaces to which they relate, often in non-gallery venues. Ally's approach is to initiate his own residency projects in situations that provide the subject matter for his work. Recent projects have taken place in a diversity of locations such as an architect's open-plan office, a disused Victorian public swimming pool, a 1960’s Modernist church and a 1930’s International Style seaside pavilion. He is interested in the relationship between buildings and their usage.

Ally Wallace is an artist based in Glasgow. Throughout his career, Ally has received major awards and has exhibited his work nationally as well as internationally. He graduated with a BA (hons) in painting from University of Sunderland, in 1985, and an MA in Site-Specific Sculpture (with Distinction) from Wimbledon College of Art, in 1998.

Eleanor Watson

Eleanor Watson paints empty spaces; allowing for the room and its contents to set a scene for stories. The objects described in varying detail are given a similar weight to props on an empty stage. What is immediately familiar and recognisable is undermined by the flattened rendering of the objects and the incongruous use of colour.

The paintings retain a likeness to the printed image; particularly in the way in which negative spaces are layered in order to describe the objects. Eleanor encourages a literary feeling of description. Clues as to whose story is being told are everywhere, although most questions are left unanswered.

Eleanor Watson attained her BA in Fine Art: Painting from Wimbledon College of Art (2012) and has since had a solo show at the Foundry Gallery, Chelsea; a joint exhibition at The Mall Galleries; was included in the RA Summer Exhibition and was shortlisted for the Young Masters Prize 2014.

Graham Watson

Graham Watson’s practice is a continuation of the Surrealist practice which aims to resolve the contradictory conditions of dream and reality. Using image appropriation and traditional cut and paste techniques to create collages primarily concerned with the evocation of the magical, a childhood sense of wonder, and possibility and consequently nostalgia, it’s power both equally ecstatic and melancholic. Watson embraces free association in his practice and avoids narrative an underlying impetus often pervades the work.

Graham Watson (born 1974) lives and works in the Lake District. Graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in 1996. Played nationally and internationally as former drummer in art band ‘Black Basque’. Recent exhibitions include: ‘1964’ P.S. Mirabel Manchester 2014, ‘End of the Line’ Paper Gallery Manchester 2013, ‘Yellow’ Rheged Gallery Penrith 2013, C-Arts Open Studio Cumbria 2013. Miranda Whall

Miranda Whall’s recent and current work includes drawings, paintings, video, photography, animation and sound through which she recurrently plays out representations of herself, presenting self portraits that explore the representation of both her body and her experiences. By constructing fantasy scenarios where she co- exists with other things, inanimate objects or living creatures Whall makes humorous, unlikely and uncanny connections, dynamics and relationships. Whall constructs fictional contexts in which she can play out both extremely personal, exhibitionist and explicit representations of her sexual, fertile, expressive and intimate self in order to draw attention to and discuss the appropriateness and place for these dimensions of ones self as well as both the politics surrounding feminine identity and of trying to be the author and owner of her own sexual and feminine image.

Biography

Miranda Whall is currently Lecturer in Fine Art at The University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Whall studied B.A Fine Art at UWIC, Cardiff between 1989 –1992 and Fine Art, Sculpture at The Royal Academy Schools between 1993 -96. She was an Associate Research Student at Goldsmiths College, University of London between 2001-02.

Her work has been shown in a number of venues and events including Glasgow International ‘06, Site Gallery, Sheffield, LPT, London, BALTIC, Gateshead, Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin, Salon 2007 New British painting and works on Paper, VANE, Newcastle, RMIT Project Space, Melbourne, Stills Gallery, Edinburgh, Prospects Pizza Express Contemporary Drawing Prize and the Jerwood Drawing Prize.

Dawn Woolley

Dawn Woolley’s artistic practice encompasses photography, video, installation and performance. She uses photographs of objects and people to question issues of artificiality and idealisation. Her artwork forms an enquiry into the act of looking and being looked at. Referring to psychoanalysis, phenomenology and feminism, Woolley examines her own experience of becoming an object of sight and also considers the experience the viewer has when looking at her as a female, and a photographic object. Voyeurism and exhibitionism intertwine as she attempts to disrupt relationships of power in purposefully provocative scenes.

Biography

Dawn Woolley completed an MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in 2008. She has developed a photography-based practice that encompasses digital video, installation and performance as well as photo-based installations. Dawn Woolley currently lives and works in Cardiff, UK and is a photography lecturer at Bridgend College. She is co-director of the curatorial project Another Product, which she founded with James Moore in 2003. Recent exhibitions have included; “Virtually Real” at The Blyth Gallery, London (2010), “Start Your Collection” at The London Art Fair (2009), “Fotomonth” in Krakow, Poland (2007) and solo exhibitions in Ffotogallery, Cardiff (2011) and Vilniaus Fotografijos Galerija, Lithuania (2012). Her artwork is held in a number of private collections in the UK, The Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado and in the Museum of Photographic Arts in Kiyosato, Japan.
